SURVEY of Multi-function Display Choice

Postby Acseatsri » Thu Nov 07, 2019 7:20 am

A little survey:

Q1: what brand and model multi-function display do you have?

Q2: are you happy with it?

Q3: if you had the opportunity for a do-over, would you make the same choice?

My answers to my own survey:

A1: I have Lowrance HDS for 5 years and Live series this season.

A2: they're decent

A3: having used Garmin displays on other boats, I would be inclined to move in that direction if starting over.

A1: Lowrance HDS-8 first generation
A2: yes
A3: yes

To give some context to A3, I am answering in the perspective of the original time of purchase. I have no regrets about the purchase I made nine years ago. If you need more perspective on why I bought the HDS-8, see my rather lengthy and detailed contemporaneous remarks from August 2010 at

Last summer I bought a Garmin 74 plus to replace my Garmin 540 that died on the Whaler.
I have stayed with Garmins. Have had 2 Garmins in the car and 2 Garmin hand helds.

A1. I am using two Garmin 740s MFD presently. Have used 4xx,5xx,740, and the 4xxx,5xxx,6xxx, with the 19x GPS also.
A2. I have been very pleased with Garmin products, ease of installation, updating, and networking, and support.
A3. I would pick Garmin again. I put the biggest Garmin I can fit for these old eyes.
The kids like and do well with the touch screen, I do not care either way, might lean towards keypad myself.
