Furuno Fall (in Love) Rebates

Postby jimh » Wed Oct 28, 2015 9:22 am

FURUNO has announced a rebate program that offers a $200 rebate on the purchase of:

--GP1870F 7-inch Chart Plotter and Fish Finder with Internal GPS/WAAS receiver

--GP1760F 5.7-inch Chart Plotter and Fish Finder with Internal GPS/WAAS receiver

The MSRP of these products are:

--GP1870 = $995
--GP1670 = $695

but the discounted prices at many retailers, such as THE GPS STORE, are more like:

--GP1870 = $700
--GP1670 = $500

With the $200 rebate, the net cost is now down to

--GP1870 = $500
--GP1670 = $300

Those are rather amazing prices for any sort of device from FURUNO, which is generally a very highly regarded manufacturer of commercial grade marine electronics. It was not too long ago that I wrote of my interest in the GP1870 as a nice product when it was selling at around $1,100 at discounted retail. It is now available of less than half that price.

And having a Furuno sounder and chart plotter for $300 is just a remarkable deal.

Both the GP1870F and GP1670F support NMEA-2000 connections. They use C-MAP cartography but do not have any included in the base unit price. Neither includes a bundled SONAR transducer. More details of their capabilities are available from:

As required by NMEA, the above specifications properly list all the parameter group number (PGN) of the NMEA-2000 data that can be handled by the devices. The usual engine parameters, PGN 127488 and 127489 are accommodated, so these devices should be able to display engine data. You could hardly find just a NMEA color display of this size at these prices.

When they had this last year I bought both a 1670 to have at my helm and a 1870 to have on the stern. Boat exactly the same other then screen size AND the 1870 has wifi (if you don't have it put in the firmware update).

My grip with it is the cmaps are expansive and don't have inland lakes. Also it would be so nice if you could network then together so you can display the fishfinder on both. Currently I have 2 Airmar P66 transducers and can only have one unit on at a time so the sonars don't interfear with each other. One other grip is there is a knob on the front and that will adjust the range but it would be soooo nice if it would adjust the gain.

Either way they have the same FF unit as the FCV587 so that's a huge plus. They work admirable for me as a fish finder and dirt cheap. I use garmin for my GPS.

I have had my Furuno FCV-582 Fishfinder from when I got my Outrage 21 in October 1994. This is a CRT unit in which the rear extends so far back, we actually needed to move the Plexiglas electronics cover 1/2" outward to make it fit. We also removed the false floor in the electronics cabinet to bolt directly into the plywood floor in order to accommodate the height. I have had the boat 21 years, entirely on the ocean. I have probably put 4000 hours on the boat. That might be an understatement. In the Outrage 21, there is a lot of pounding with the 10-20kt winds. I make long runs and have been to Catalina (26.10 NM from my Newport Beach, CA home base) over 200 times. This Furuno has yet to die. I have no idea how this unit which is designed to be in the wheelhouse of a much larger and more stable boat survives to this day after all that I have put it through. While all of the marine electronics companies play leapfrog with each other in regards to features, I can attest to Furuno's professional build and virtual indestructibility.

UPDATE: It should be noted that the two FURUNO chart plotter and SONAR devices I mention, GP1670F and GP1870F, are NMEA-2000-only devices. They do not have an NMEA-0183 port. If you need to interface them to a NMEA-0183 device, you will need an optional (and probably expensive) converter.
