Montauk and Striper
Montauk and Striper
I've been looking at a couple boats in the 17 to 20-foot range and ran across a 17 Striper. Besides the side console, the Striper seems to be the same hull as a 17 Montauk. Is this correct? Thanks--Bill

See the REFERENCE section for the article on the 16/17 hulls:

Re: Montauk and Striper
I'd go with the Boston Whaler Montauk. Over the long run the Montauk will cost a lot less than a Striper.

I don't understand your comment on the Montauk costing less in the long run. If I understand it correctly, the basic difference between the two boats is the console. How can one console be more expensive to maintain over the other?
Re: Montauk and Striper
The MONTAUK 17 is probably the most popular of all Boston Whaler boats, and certainly the most popular variation of the 17-foot hull. On that basis, a MONTAUK 17 is likely to retain more value as it ages due to its great popularity and the continued strong market for that model.

Re: Montauk and Striper
I have had both . Currently have sit down side console. I find it easier to fish out of and move around in. Have always thought the console was too big relative to size of boat. I also have an 18' Outrage that is 1' wider but has the same console . That combo is better to me. I'm thinking about protesting the console size. Peace
Re: Montauk and Striper
I do understand the Montauk is by far the more popular model of the two. I was just wondering what the physical difference was other than the side console. It appears that is the only difference.
Thanks to all for your responses.

There is no hull difference. The 17' I have now is the GLS. It has a 1 piece insert that fits into the hull . The same set up as the sport model except the GLS is fiberglass and the sport is wood. Whaler used the same hull for several different models in all their boats up to the 25'. In my opinion the 2nd generation Whalers are the highest quality boats ever made . Peace

Re: Montauk and Striper
What a great question. I have owned a 2005 Montauk 17 and just purchased a 1978 striper 15 (and have an 05 305 conquest...a real whaler fan).
It depends on the year but the stripers were designed to be bass boats and my model has the "smirk" hull with an 8" draft. It planes and turns quickly, has two fishing seats and the helm besides being on the side is lower and is designed to be driven while seated. As I understand, the newer montauks have a different hull design and you can stand up while underway comfortably.
The striper is more of a small water inshore fishing boat. We use ours for crabbing in a shallow bay and as a runabout there.
There are a few other differences but depending on what you are doing with the boat, I agree with others that the Montauk is more universal.
