1982 13' Sport Hull Weight

Postby Irongate » Mon May 15, 2017 10:45 am

I was finally able to take my boat to a scale to get an idea of the amount of water that may be in her/ It looks like the bare hull weight is exactly 420- lbs.

Is [a hull weight of 420-lbs] a show stopper for me to continue working on the boat?

Or, is [a hull weight of 420-lbs] actually not too far off of the actual true bare hull weight for this year and model?

Thanks.

Jim

Depending on the model, hull weight should be around 320 to 410 lbs according to the CW reference. It looks like the Sport model is 320 lbs and the Limited is 410 lbs.

Wow - so this may be about 100 lbs more than it should. Tough decision as to how to proceed.

Thanks for the information.

If there are no soft spots in the hull, (bottom and floor) and the transom is still solid, I personally would proceed. I'm sure a lot of older whalers have some water in them. On a positive note, your whaler will still be way lighter than a new one. I think new hulls weighs in at 640 lbs, dry weight.

There doesn't seem to be any soft spots. Not sure how to check transom wood but I guess I'll proceed and see if I can get a nice little fresh water lake fishing platform out of this!

If you are thinking of buying a 13-foot Boston Whaler boat, and if you are a normal adult male, the best way to check the weight is:

--have the current owner remove the engine if it has one,

--empty the boat of all gear and fuel tanks, and

--you should be able to lift the rear corner of the boat without too much trouble;

--try both corners,

--remember to bend your knees and lift with your knees, not your back.

I have seen some that I could not budge. If the owner refuses to remove the outboard pass on the boat. A waterlogged hull is worthless as far as I'm concerned--rich
