1990 Yamaha speedometer hose?

Postby DirtMike » Mon May 15, 2017 11:05 am

1990 Yamaha 90ETLD on a 1990 Montauk 17 part ID question:

Is the hose hanging down into the splash well for a speedometer? I can't think of anything else it would be for, my manuals and parts diagrams don't label it - the best I got was that it is a hose. No speedometer is presently installed in the boat, and to my knowledge none has ever been installed.

Thanks for the help!

You can have it cheap, fast, or right. Pick two.

Mike -

Very possible. My 1999 Yamaha has a very small hole, on the front portion of the lower unit. It's approximately 1/2 way between the lower unit hub and the anti-cavitation plate. Could also be the indicator outlet that's been misrouted that shows when glancing at the motor, that the water pump is operational.

If there is a water stream running from it when not moving, and is warm, it's the water pump indicator stream, and would warm up over time.

If there is no water running, until moving, then it's the speedo tube.

Regards - Don

Don - Thanks. No water when not moving, more flow at faster speeds. Indicator for the water pump is on the back corner of the motor, and is flowing constantly (now that I have a new water pump). I noticed this hose when I took the lower off for the water pump replacement. It wasn't connected to anything and I couldn't find any info on where it would connect. Guess I can look into a speedo if I ever see the need.

Looks like the speedo hose. No speedo ? Plug it.

If you found it after removing the lower you probably ended up disconnecting it from the rest of the hose that is probably routed amongst the rest of your rigging.
The speedo hose can usually be seen as a small loop where the lower bolts up on the forward section.
Even without a speedo the hose may still be routed up to the dash.
