2001 160 Dauntless Lift Eyes

Did a 2001 [160] Dauntless come with hoisting eyes? I am the only Dauntless owner at my club. Most guys with smaller Outrages use a rope system through eye-holes to hoist. This is especially helpful when painting the bottom. Thanks for any information.

If I remember correctly the Owner's Manual for my 1999 Dauntless 16 showed how to rig lines for lifting the boat. I believe the attaching points were the bow eye and the two transom eyes. Don't rely on my recollection because it has been several years sine we sold the boat. Boston Whaler would be the definitive source for correct information.

In succession, select the YEAR (2001), the FAMILY (DAUNTLESS), and the MODEL (160 DAUNTLESS)

Next select DOCUMENT TYPE to be DIAGRAMS. When the grow bar completes its search, select GET RESULTS.

Click on SHOW MORE.

Open the documents numbered 10, 11, and 12 using a PDF viewer.

Inspect the drawings and parts list. You will find in the drawing at the bow there are components labeled 1, 2, and 3. In the parts list the description of part 2 is "lifting eye."

You will find in the drawing at the stern there are components labeled 4 and 5. In the parts list the description of part 4 is "stern eye."

It is typical for a smaller Boston Whaler boat to be able to be lifted by lines attached to the lifting eye and stern eyes. I don't know if there is a specific rigging method employed. Sometimes a strongback support is used to permit attachment of two lifting lines to the three lifting points.

I happened to be browsing the Boston Whaler literature for another boat, a 2017 190 MONTAUK, and in the owner's manual there is a warning that the boat should not be lifted by the lifting eye that is in the anchor locker. The proper lift point is the towing eye. On that basis, you might check with Boston Whaler to see if similar caution applies to the 2001 160 DAUNTLESS. Also, the use of the lifting eye is recommended only for temporary use; for permanent lifting the use of straps under the hull is recommended.

I have a 2001 160 Ventura, which I would think is the same hull. When I took delivery from the dealer, it was lifted straight from the water to the trailer using the bow and stern lift eyes.

I am reasonably confident that using the lifting eyes on the transom and the lifting eye in the anchor locker for the one-time purpose of picking up the boat and moving it directly to a trailer would be considered a temporary use of the lifting eyes.

I would never use the anchor locker eye to lift a boat, wouldn't hesitate to use the bow eye though (at least on a quality boat).

Those two 'eyes' are structurally different and have significant strength differences.

On many of our Boston Whalers the lifting/bow eye (towing eye) and the anchor "tie off" eye are a single assemblage with a common shaft passing through the hull from the anchor locker to the bow. If I remember correctly that is the case with the 160 Dauntless. That may not be so with the larger models.
