Mounting new SONAR Transducer to Transom

Postby glurtis » Thu Aug 09, 2018 8:28 pm

I would appreciate any suggestions as how to proceed to replace the transducer from the old to the new transducer.

I recently replaced a SONAR transducer, and of course the new mounting holes did not line up with the old mounting holes. I cut a small rectangle from some leftover KING Starboard, mounted it to the hull using the old mounting holes and some 3M 4200, then drilled the Starboard for the new mounting holes, making sure to choose screws that didn't penetrate to the gelcoat.

Examine the existing mounting holes on the transom that remain from the old SONAR transducer location to see if any can be re-used to mount the new SONAR transducer. For any old mounting holes on the transom that cannot be reused, fill them with epoxy resin. Drill new holes for the new SONAR transducer mounting.

Daze,
It was clever to use the original transducer's mounting holes to mount the Starboard adapter. An added benefit is that the adapter can be slightly oversized to accept some of the more outsized transducers used with modern sonars. On the curved transoms of many classic boats the curvature presents some added challenges.

Thanks for the tips. How about getting the old cable out and the new cable in?

    a. Tie pull string to old cable under console and pull out through to the stern?
    b. Tie new cable to pull string and pull new cable to the console?

    c. pull in a new pull cable when pulling in new SONAR transducer wiring with the temporary pull wire

There's not a lot of room in the rigging tunnel, so I'd go with approach (a) because the plug at the console end is smaller than the transducer.
