2008 190 Outrage bilge smells like gasoline

Postby funnybanana » Fri Jun 14, 2019 9:06 pm

I noticed when pulling [the 2008 190 OUTRAGE] drain plug that there is a bit of gasoline smell. It's not overly strong, and I've never noticed gasoline leaking into the [sump].

Q1: is [detecting the odor of gasoline] something I should be concerned about?

Q2: what can I do to look further into this?

Thanks.

Check for leaks in all the fuel lines to which you have access. If you don't see any, have the fuel tank pressure tested. Chances are it's nothing - if gasoline were really getting out, the smell would be strong. But better to be safe.

Nothing to worry about. The type of tank in use may leak some of the gasoline odor, but [something is] pretty darn bullet proof. I had the same type tank on my 1999 Dauntless 18 and my 190 Nantucket.

Detecting the odor of gasoline is a concern.

If the fuel tank is plastic, it may have some permeability and be emitting a slight trace of gasoline odor.

I recommend you contact Boston Whaler customers service. Inquire if an odor of gasoline is normal or abnormal.

Another source of a gasoline odor may be a rubber hose in the fuel system. Usually the filler hose is NOT rated for continual presence of gasoline. If you add too much fuel to the tank so that fuel remains in the filler hose, there is risk the gasoline will permeate the rubber.

Q3: By chance did you recently add fuel and filled the tank to overflowing?

Vent hoses are also usually not rated for continual presence of liquid gasoline.

Give the filler and vent hoses a sniff.

When you removed the plug in the sump drain, if there were gasoline mixed with the water you should have seen a sheen of the gasoline on the water surface.

The OP was seriously burned in the boat fire and has not been able to type. Just kidding. Like many topics, started and then no activity from the OP since the day of posting the initial article. This fellow has three posts. They all elicited very cogent replies, but not a single follow-on from him.
