1963 13 STANDARD Re-power with Period Correct Appearance

Postby Dr D » Wed Jul 10, 2019 1:59 pm

I’m considering a new motor for my old 1963 13 STANDARD. I love the idea of going with a “period correct” vintage motor, but I hate the idea of being stranded with an unreliable motor. My 1986 Mercury 25-HP tiller has treated me right for many years, But there’s nothing period correct about that. I saw an old thread where a guy was considering re-painting or adding a retro-fit cowl to give the appearance of an old Bearcat outboard.

I’m looking for some ideas as to how best to go about achieving vintage look without sacrificing reliability. If I could buy a brand new motor built to look like in 1960-era motor I would do it in a second. All thoughts and ideas are welcome.

I know a 1968 Nauset owner who repowered from a original 55hp Evinrude Triumph to a E-TEC 90 HO. He repainted the cowl and had custom decals made.

Exactly! That is stunningly beautiful. I wonder if there is anyway for me to know for sure what motor would have originally hung on my transom?

Back in the days prior to Brunswick purchasing Boston Whaler in 1996, it was the dealer who sold and installed the engine. You had a choice.

Thanks Phil. Makes sense. BW told me my boat was built in Rockland, Mass. I just wish I knew the rest of her story. My kids say Dad loves his Whaler more than us. I tell that’s not true...I love you all equally;)
