Postby JerEazy » Tue Jul 16, 2019 12:15 pm

I did one on the face but it is real skinny and you have to ben your neck to see it. When I redid the interior in my 13 I did it on the top so I can actually look at while driving. Water pressure is better than temp as it shows why it is overheating as you have an overheat alarm if you have the single OMC controlbox. There is a way to test it by putting a key inside a slot under the neutral throttle lever to ground it.

10x13 prop if aluminum OMC prop. The 11.75 is way too small and the 15 too big unless you weigh 100lbs.I have seen many run the 11.75 because they don't have a tach and like the holeshot. The earlier 35's have a higher redline than my 82 did. Not sure what years but it probably was not a great idea and why they lowered it after a year or so.

The problem you are going to find is the correct tach. I had one but I lent it to someone and they broke it. The single controlbox has a rubber connector that the tach plugs into. They have a weird pole like 3 where a standard tach has a switch for 4, 6, 8. I am rusty on this as it was many years ago and not sure where in hell you would find a tach for it.

i'll have to check on the prop - but normally like to get an RPM baseline before i start fiddling. She has a great hole-shot currently. And i absolutely agree, i preferred a water pressure gauge over temp any day.

the 79 35hp needs a 5 pole tach and most of the OMC tachs have the 5 pole option on the back. Apparently you wire it directly to the rectifier yellow wire (yellow-grey preferred) and run that 18ga wire up.

I'm going to explore a few options. I would rather not cut holes in the wood, but it is what it is.

5 pole...ok. I knew it was weird. Most of the tachs I run are Teleflex or gaffrig. You need a non-systems check tach which in this day might be hard to find. Most of my recent rigging has been modern 4 stroke Suzukis so out of the loop. In my opinion, OMC makes a superior tach when used on an OMC. Mercury does not mind using a Teleflex where OMC gives a better more constant reading with their tach. My 35hp tach was only a 5pole. When they repowered with a newer 40 it was way off and had to be replaced.

They used to make a tach that was dash mount but probably not since the 80's....kinda like hood tachs in the 60's.

there's a Marine Surplus store here in Bradenton that has boxes and boxes of old tachs and gauges. It's like a toy store for me.

a dash mount tach would be nice. Or even an angled Super Sport interior with a more angled helm console and behind seat storage --I laugh aloud--

Make sure it is plastic or SS.

I used to live at marine surplus. This is my first restoration since around 08 so it's been a while. I was there a couple weekends ago for gas struts for a hatch. They usually do not have OMC tachs so check the poles as most are 4,6,8.

Might want to try the marina in the trailer park off Florida ave too. Can't remember his name(Gary?) but he has boxes of old crap and might even just give it to you. I have had good luck there trying to find an hour meter with close to the right hours on it before somebody left the ignition key on, etc. My friend bought a couple used Fichs off him too when you could rob them for $1500 for a 200hp.

On my 1967 Sport 13, I mounted my tach on top of the console. The tilt and trim control is on the left side of the console.

Here's a couple of pic's of what I did for my 13... I used a block of Sapele and cut it at an angle and mounted an Airguide speedo and Tach on it...
