Remove Mechanical Cable Steering, Single Cable Drive

Postby grizzly » Mon Nov 04, 2019 12:52 pm

I am removing [the single cable mechanical cable] steering gear from my 1977 Sport to refinish the wood. I believe this is the original, non-hydraulic steering.

I can’t figure out how to remove the steering cable from where it attaches to the worm gear or drive that is attached to the steering wheel under the console. I removed the nut attaching the cable to the drive but that did not allow the steering cable to be detached.

Q1: Is it necessary to first pull off the steering wheel?

if the nut is off, just turn the wheel, if it sucks the cable in, turn it the other way, it will push the cable all the way out
