210 Outrage - Rear lockers always wet

Postby zigzag930 » Mon Jan 06, 2020 5:33 pm

I do love my 210 Outrage, except for one constant annoyance. The rear lockers are always wet. When I open the hatches, the inside (underneath) is soaked, even when it hasn't rained. There are drain groves all around the hatch cover, but no rubber seals on the hatch itself.

What can be done to stop the "wet"?

I like to keep dock lines in there and they always come out soaked.

Also, the VERADO power steering [electric pump] is on the other side. I know that moisture and a VERADO power steering pump are a bad combination.

All suggestions appreciated.

ZIg, I know your problem but haven't paid it much attention with my 210 Outrage--but now I'm curious where the water is coming from.

In Florida, we have a lot of morning dew and condensation that plagues my boat. If [the water is from] condensation, [the water] is on the outside of the hatch and migrates to the underside and then into the compartment. Just theorizing. But if [the water is from condensation or dew] there is a simple solution:

  • Remove the hatch cover
  • route the edge about a 1/2-inch in from the edge
  • route off about 1/32-inch from the bottom of the hatch cover

The small right angle created will cause the condensate to drop off into the drain channel before it can go into the locker. This is an old trick that is used by the people that make granite countertops. Without that small ledge on the underside of the granite any water that rolls over the edge of the countertop and runs down the face of some very expensive cabinetry. With the ledge it drips off the right angle and drops on the floor.

Let me know if you have a different situation or solution to the problem.

With regards to routing the edge of the hatch cover my first thought is to employ a router table with fence which will limit the distance from the hatch covers edge and control the depth of the router as well.

That is a bit of challenge for the average DIY'er.

Would adding a taped on strip help?

Phil I agree, not everyone has a router and router table. I'm trying to think of a better easier way. That being said, I can try it and see if it does the trick. If so, I would be willing to do the same mod for others on this site with the same concern. By the way, I don't have a router table either but it would be a good way to justify to my spouse for getting one.

On the other hand I do have a fine old Bridgeport milling machine that could handle the job too. I can practice with some Starboard first.

FNO, thanks for your input.

I do have a router table, but not sure I completely understand your idea.

Do you mean to cut a 1/8-inch-deep groove around the entire underside of the hatch cover at 1/2-inch in from the outer edge?

If that is correct, I still don't understand how it stops the condensation (which I believe is the culprit). The entire bottom of the hatch appears to be soaked with big drops of water, so how do the grooves make the water move to the outer edges? Or, maybe my meant that the water moves to the grooves when I lift the cover?

If you try this, I'd be really interested in how it works. The wet lockers drives me nuts.

This morning I came up with an idea to experiment with 1" rigid insulation to see if this may help with the starboard condensing.

I will cut a piece to the size of the rear seat and lay it over the hatch on one side. I'll compare the results of the left and right sides after a few days to see if this has any effect. My thinking is that the starboard lacks significant insulation properties allowing the cold morning air to condense inside the compartment lid.

Zig, thanks for asking the questions. I'm not wanting a groove, just a flat cut (1/32"-1/16") on the underside of the hatch cover that only is on the edge of the hatch cover. And the flat cut should not be anywhere other than were the water channel is on the rear base cover. If the flat relief is cut too far in the water will still pass into the compartment. I will try to draw up a sketch of what I am proposing so we can understand the idea better.

I now see what it takes to get Frank to talk online....start a thread about a 210 Outrage.
On my 24th Whaler. Currently in the stable: 86 18' Outrage, 81 13' Sport(original owner), 87 11' Sport, 69 Squall(for sale cheap).
