My new 1990 Super Sport 15

Postby Fishteeth » Sat Sep 21, 2019 7:23 am

Last weekend, we took delivery of a 1990 SUPER SPORT 15 I found it here by posting a WTB ad. I searched for a long time without any luck until I found this forum. I had a few people PM me with good boats. One is for sale on this forum right now and is very similar to our boat. Thanks for the great forum.

And thanks, Tom. The boat is in fantastic condition. Tom, the previous owner of the boat, had meticulously cared for the boat since 1993.

The boat is exactly what we were looking for. The only change we plan is to add a bimini.

Give me a source for a bimini.

Sweet ride.

When I was a boy, the 15 SS w/ a 70 was the dream.

But there was never quite enough lawn mowing money. : )

Enjoy!

That is terrific. Cute family, beautiful area, classic boat. Those girls will never forget growing up with the SS. Excellent, excellent decision.

You can fit a consumer off-the-shelf Bimini to a Super Sport 15. For details see

http://continuouswave.com/maintenance-logs/bimini/

ASIDE: several of the images appear incorrectly oriented; the orientation seen may vary with the browser software. If a camera is held at a 90-degree rotation from the normal landscape aspect, in-line images in HTML pages will generally appear with improper orientation. I eventually corrected the image orientation.

If you don't have a cover, get that too. Carver makes both.

Look at wood diagram before mounting. Not much wood on the gunwales.

Nice and a good buy given the quality Carver provides.

I’ve read everything I can find on mounting a Bimini on the 1990 SS 15. A little nervous. Does anyone have a diagram of where the wood is under to mount to?

Thank you!

A wood locating diagram for the 15-footer has been available for many years. Visit the REFERENCE article on the 15-foot hull:

You can see the wood patches on the gunwales.

I own a 1986 15’ Sport. I mounted a bimini but didn’t drill into the gunwales. I used a ball mount on the middle side rail vertical supports. It works great. I did have to drill for the strap mounts but not the base.
This may sound confusing so I’ll take some photos.

Thank you for the help and diagrams! It was certainly a leap of faith to start drilling. I think it turned out pretty well, but please feel free to comment and critique. Any advice would be helpful. The straps sometimes vibrate more than I would expect. Perhaps I just need to tighten them more?

Give the straps a few more twists to help with reducing the vibration.

Edit: She looks great by the way!

NEW TOPIC: ELECTRICAL LAMPS, SPEEDOMETER

Postby Fishteeth » Fri Jul 31, 2020 10:10 am

My navigation lights and speedometer have quit working. I'm thinking it may be a fuse. Can someone point me in the right direction on how to fix this? FYI I am a novice on electrical problems. Thanks.

HOW BOAT SPEEDOMETERS WORK

Postby jimh » Fri Jul 31, 2020 11:50 am

Most boat speedometers operate on water pressure using a Pitot tube. There is no involvement of electricity in their operation.

FUSE REPAIRS

Postby jimh » Fri Jul 31, 2020 11:51 am

Fuses cannot be repaired. If a fuse has opened due to over-current the only remedy is replacement with a new fuse.
