1983 Outrage 25 Re-power

Postby indiboy » Wed Apr 13, 2016 6:27 pm

Hi All. I am in the process of shipping a 1983 Boston Whaler Outrage 25 to Maine. I will definitively be re-powering with twins so please do not try to convince me otherwise. I am considering 115-HP Yamaha engines but fearing an OUTRAGE 25 may be a bit under-powered at 225 HP. I thought of 150-HP twin engines, but then I found out that there is not a counter-rotating option for the 150-HP [i.e., from Yamaha].

What is [the maximum power rating for a 1983 Boston Whaler OUTRAGE 25]?

Would the 225-HP be too little?

I've looked around on other sites and other forums, and, from what I see [the maximum horsepower rating is] 300-HP.

I'd like a professional answer if not the manufacturer's answer.

What length shafts are required to accommodate twins on this Outrage 25?

I'd really appreciate some input and advice here from someone that has or had the same boat and went down the same path. Thank you.

Howdy G,

I think you may be mistaken about the F150 not being available in counter-rotation.
Of the four engines available in Yamaha's I4 series, the F175 appears to be the only one where counter-rotation is not offered.

Good luck with your repower.

Thx Barnacle!

For some reason the dealer told me they didn't offer the 150's in the counter rotation... They obviously they do. Still wondering if 225 is too little for the boat. I know she's right on the size threshold of not only deciding b/n single or twins but also b/n 225-300 HP.

Thx again!!

I just repowered my 1990 Outrage 25 WhalerDrive with twin 150 counter rotating Hondas. I can't comment on performance as I will not launch for a few more weeks.

I have a 1983 25' Outrage Cuddy. The boat had twin 130 HP 2-strokes when I bought it. I felt that the power was adequate, but barely. The hull wants more HP, although I could get it up on plane with a single 130 without real trouble. I felt the top end speed was lacking (mid 30's).

That said, I also had 25" shafts on there and the hull calls for 20" shafts for twin setup. ..

I have since sold the 130 HP outboards and purchased a set of used 200 HP outboards which will be mounted this year.

If I had resources to repower with new engine(s) I would consider a SINGLE 300 HP or twin 150/175 HP engines in the flavor of your choice.

Good Luck! It's a great boat, you will have a lot of fun on her!

If I'm not mistaken your Outrage 25 is rated for a max of 300hp.

Single or twins, it's a tough call with the reliability of today's outboards...especially so with Yamaha.
Don't get me wrong, twins are nice. Almost always will at least one of them will get you home and low speed maneuverability in tight quarters can't be beat. That said, there are a few negatives to consider.
1 - Cost. You'll definitely spend quite a bit more to repower with twins.
2 - twice the maintenance...oil changes, water pumps, etc.
3 - you will lose about 15 to 20% power to the water with twins vs. single. In other words a single 250 will perform nearly as well as a pair of
150s...except you'll burn less fuel.
4 - twice the chance for something to go wrong. Twins may always get you home, however if one of them is being problematic at the dock, you
ain't going out.

Not trying to change your mind, just my two cents.

Let us know about the repower. I'm contemplating twin 150hp Suzuki 4 strokes, 2016 models on my [1989] Outrage 25 Cuddy Whaler Drive. These are four cylinder.

Your questions about maximum horsepower rating and recommend engine shaft length are answered in the REFERENCE section article on Boston Whaler hull dimensions and specifications. See

http://continuouswave.com/whaler/refere ... hulls24-31

I'd like a professional answer....

Those are curious restrictions to apply to a question asked on an open internet web forum. I don't believe many of us enter "answering web forum questions" on our 1040 tax forms for "Occupation."

A close friend had twin 115 Yamahas on a 2450 Pursuit that he purchased used. Similar and size and dimension to the Outrage 25.
Terribly disappointed in the performance. HE (unbelievably) NEVER SEA TRIALED THE BOAT BEFORE PURCHACE.
He (fortunately) sold it to his co-worker who was looking for a boat that his boys could use that was NOT high performance.
He must have gone through a dozen sea trails with other potential buyers who walked away after experiencing the sluggish performance.
150's would be best all around.

I have twin Optimax 150s on mine. That is a powerful 150, and it will easily plane off and run mid-30s on one engine.

Mine are counter-rotating, 25" shaft. The prior owner had them on normal jackplates which left them too low. I installed high-rise jackplates to get the 25" shaft to the right height on the transom designed for 20" twins - worked great.

I don't know if counter-rotating really makes a big difference. I've seen posts that make me think it does not. Normal rotation units would be simpler since you can get the 20" shaft to fit the transom.

Power just depends on what you want - the Outrage 25 is an easy planing big boat.

I am in the midst of replacing my jackplates with a full width Hermco bracket and they are available if you decide to go with 25" shafts.
