New Whaler Looks like Grady White

Postby vze2gbs4 » Thu Aug 25, 2016 12:05 am

Something very , very interesting is about to roll out from whaler factory and new baby ( or two ) is from their commercial division . It is called 31 Guardian and it looks like they used 315 conquest hull and decided to make a center console out of it for their heavy duty customers. There is also a pilot house version of same size called 31 Vigilant. It got me very curious because I have never liked their bigger curved styled outrages . Whaler started straightening that curve with new models and it looks much better.

This new 31 Guardian is so far only presented by drawing and computer generated pictures but it is hard not to notice that profile looks almost identical to a Grady White 306 Canyon. I have to admit that I like it so far, with very business like deck that has plenty of deck space not having all creature comfort options that recreational models have. Let us see. How will new baby look like once real life photos are posted?

What do you guys think. Is this how whaler should look like?

I'm not a fan of reverse sheer hulls or euro transoms. That's why I consider the new Montauks to be the best looking new Boston Whalers. Of course, I prefer the styling of the 1948 MG TC sports car to the Mazda Miata or any other modern era sports cars. My tastes tend to be classic or old fashioned.

I have a 1999 [OUTRAGE] 28. It has a stepped Euro transom. My 2002 [OUTRAGE] 230 had a Euro transom. I like them because I like the swim step. the battery storage, the boarding ladder, the transom door, and the fresh water washdown. [The Euro transom] makes a great place to bleed the fish or keep a trash bucket. Very functional in my view. My twin 300's don't look to shabby hanging on the back of that Euro transom either. I like them all.

When I buy a boat I always look when engineers pulled a miracle and made a boat that looked bigger than it is. There are few of them that they did over years. he current 190 Outrage is one of them, and the 2002 to 2008 210 0utrage is another. The 1993 to 1998 21 Outrage had also space galore.

And, unfortunately, there is other side: when they succeeded to shrink a space. A 23 Outrage is perfect example. We had one in family for two years. It has a massive transom that cuts four feet off the boat, an oversized console, and no forward side sitting--just straight elevated bow area for very awkward sitting.

My 190 Outrage had more room than the 23. I was never a big fan of that hull.

I don't see any images to look at. Where are we supposed to see the new design?

Thanks for describing in a narrative manner how to reach a particular web page. Resources on the web are best described by giving the uniform resource locator or URL for the web page.

Please use the wheel on your mouse to scroll down this page to find an image of what I believe is the boat you are discussing.

I believe that the design of the new Boston Whaler boat that is under discussion in this thread is the boat shown below:

Now that we can see the boat under discussion, I believe that the part of the GUARDIAN 31 boat that offends is the hull profile resembles something made by Grady-White called a Canyon 306. Here is a similar view of the Grady-White Canyon 306:

Are these the correct boats and correct images?

While not the classic I REALLY like the the lines of this Boston Whaler Guardian Center Console versus the long ever arching shear line (rubrail) on the current Whaler Outrages.

The classics had such a hard and very flat shear line and you only get that look today is on the Montauk and Dauntless lines.

Their 210 Montauk outfitted as a Guardian look very classic too...

Yes, but that Hunt Yachts boat will put quite a hurt on your bank account.

That is a very interesting video. I had not seen the 210 MONTAUK hull dressed-out as a law-enforcement boat. Also of some interest: the twin Yamaha four-stroke engines on the transom.

If I were going to buy a 210 Montauk, I would opt to just get the 21 Guardian instead just to get twins. It would look great with twin E-tecs and in Tan Gelcoat, too.

21 Guardian with Twins.

I just noticed the rather unusual design used to support the hard top in the stern: an extension of the stern tow bar gives support to the aft end of the hard top. That is quite an interesting detail, and I don't think I've seen that--at least not on any Grady-White boats, eh?

If imitation is the best form of flattery, then Grady White should be flattered by Boston Whaler imitating their design. Or do we call that modern splashing via CAD?

I would not attribute the profile look we are discussing as an invention of Grady-White or something exclusive to them. You see that same profile or shear line in other large center console boats.

And, as mentioned in the initial article:

All good points about there being many boats of similar design. Clearly not attributable to Grady White. I guess that is why I prefer to restore the classic outrage vs buy new..

You guys are one tough crowd. Grady-White is Boston Whaler's number [one] competitor, and, of course, it will be [the] first boat that comes to mind. Grady-White design hasn't changed much [in the] last 30 years. Boston Whaler designers, on the other hand, have problems finding their own identity on their large hulls that don't have that Whaler straight line we are used to. Just look at their new large [center console] lines--does Contender rings the bell?

The profile of the [artist's drawing of the 31 Guardian] sure does look like the current Grady. Maybe they're doing the Mercury, Yamaha, Tohatsu paint-swap-thing.

If my memory serves correct this profile was first seen on Ocean Master 31's center consoles in the late 1970's. I can't remember an earlier center console boat using that profile prior to Ocean Master.

No doubt there. My 1997 17 Outrage II had more perceived room then my current 1999 21 Outrage.
But, the 21 is heavier, rides a bit better and has a head in the console which was an important consideration if I ever wanted my wife to go out.

And no doubt the next boat will be different from any of my previous boats, with a combination of all the features we desire.
