Renovation of 1988 Outrage 18

Postby ladygullrock » Tue Nov 01, 2016 4:04 pm

I am considering renovations/upgrades: New fuel tank and new power. The hull, deck, and trailer are in great condition. The twin 1988 70hp motors are in spec as far as compression and the fuel tank is not leaking to my knowledge. My options, in my opinion, are to keep running the twins after a complete maintenance approximately 2k-3k. The tank, removal and installation is around 3-3.5. A new 150DPX ETEC 150 hp installed with steering would be $14,800.
My questions to the forum members are: What option would you choose? Is the hull worth the expense? What would the rig be worth?

I have a 1986 18' and was facing the same decision last year. I put a new F150 and steering on for $15k. The fuel economy is 2x what it was so I use 2 12 gal tanks beneath the RPS rather than replacing the integral tank. I did not trust the original tank with a new engine purchase. I also know I will never recoup the cost of repowering a 30 year old boat but the peace of mind and pride of ownership when I pull that baby to me is worth it. When I see that vintage Whaler any where else , I always take a second look myself. James Madison said over 200 years ago "Enlightened statesmen will not always be at the helm". God bless us all. Peace. Mike

I stared in this picture a few years ago, so have a little to offer.

1. Ask yourself if the Outrage 18 meets your needs, and if you can see it doing so for the next 5 years.

2. Ask yourself if its just a boat, or if you love it.

If you can answer yes to 1 and love it, I'd say proceed to repower. It will make it feel like a new boat.

My repowered 18 is a gem...but I decided to upgrade to a 22 after 1.5 years! Oooops!

Thanks for your responses. I appreciate your insights on a decision to renovate. I need to have a Whaler in my life.

I am just starting a complete restoration of a 1989 Outrage 18. I just finished a 17 Montauk complete re-do for my oldest son with a Yamaha 4 stroke, new paint job, electronics, canvas, etc. but someone made me an unsolicited offer that I couldn't say no to. I just bought a 150 Yamaha 4 stroke for this 18 and hydraulic steering. With any luck I will be dropping it off to get mounted by end of March. I'm going to tear everything off and start over - keeping only what is stainless, teak and fiberglass. Stainless will get machine polished, teak will get sanded and stay natural and I will alw grip all of the fiberglass. Everything else is getting replaced. Will keep you posted - please do the same. Also doing a 1989 13 Supersport for my youngest son's upcoming 13th birthday.

I am looking for a new trailer for this 18 or a used one in top shape. Also looking for a replacement bow cleat or else I will have to send in the existing one for polishing or dipping - it's aluminum.
