ICON Pro RPM Gauge Analogue Inputs

The Evinrude ICON Pro RPM gauge has five analogue inputs. These analog inputs can be used to convert a variety of sensor inputs into various parameters. The available choices for type of analogue input data are:

  • FUEL
  • TRIM
  • N/C

A very common use for an analogue input on an ICON Pro RPM gauge will be for sensing the engine trim. In this application the engine trim sensor is connected to the chosen analogue input, and to no other circuits, that is, there is no connection to a 12-Volt external source.

To illustrate the connection and procedure in detail, I will use the analogue input to the ICON Pro RPM gauge associated with pole-6 of connector P1 (P1-6) to become the analogue input for an Evinrude trim sensor. There are two elements of this installation: wiring and gauge configuration.

Wiring at ICON Pro RPM Gauge
This input is available on a loose conductor with white insulation that is identified by a marking and is part of the bundle of conductors associated with the P1 connector on the rear face of the ICON Pro RPM gauge which are arranged as a wiring harness. The P1-6 conductor is connected to the engine trim sensor. The exact manner of making this connection is left to the installer to implement. Access to the TRIM SENDER is usually taken at the three-pole TRIM SENSOR connector at PIN-C. Again, the exact manner of making this connection will be up to the installer to determine.

Locating TRIM SENSOR circuit in different wiring harnesses

One convenient method of making connection to the TRIM SENSOR is to locate the circuit at the remote control end of the engine wiring harness. The location of the circuit varies with the type of wiring harness. Typically the ICON Pro RPM gauge analogue input will be used most often when the engine wiring harness is of the Modular Wiring Harness or MWS type.

In the MWS wiring harness, the trim sensor circuit is provided as loose individual conductor in a three-conductor bundle. The trim circuit conductor is identified by the White with Tan stripe insulation. This conductor will be connected to the analogue input of the ICON Pro RPM gauge. In our example, we use the input at P1-6.

Normally with an I-Command Wiring harness the ICON Pro RPM gauge analogue input would not be used, unless the engine is a three-cylinder engine and the engine EMM cannot provide trim information on its NMEA-2000 output.

In the I-Command Wiring Harness, the trim sensor circuit is not broken out at the helm end of the harness. To gain access to the circuit, the installer must modify the wiring harness. To modify the I-Command wiring harness, locate the White with Tan stripe conductor in the wiring harness bundle. There will also be a 47-Ohm resistor connected between the White with Tan stripe conductor and the Violet conductor. To use the analogue input method, this resistor must be removed from the trim circuit. Then the White with Tan stripe conductor is connect to the ICON Pro RPM gauge input P1-6 using a suitable wiring method as determined by the installer.

Once the wiring of the trim sensor to the ICON Pro RPM gauge analogue input has been made, the second step of the installation is to configure the ICON Pro RPM gauge to use this source for finding the trim data.


The ICON Pro RPM gauge must be configured to get the trim sensor input from the analogue input circuit. There are two steps in this configuration: selecting the input to be used; selecting the type of sensor that will be connected. Both parameters are configured in the menu system of the ICON Pro RPM gauge.

    Before attempting this procedure, read the ICON Pro RPM gauge user guide in order to become familiar with how to use the MENU button, how to distinguish the function of the MENU button by the duration of the button press, and how to navigate the menu structure of the gauge. Until these skills are acquired, it will not be possible to accomplish the configuration. The advice provided below assumes the reader can accomplish the basic menu navigation skills and understands how to enter or exit a menu level and to make a menu selection.

Selecting the input connection
The input connection is selected by navigating to the individual input menu. It may be helpful to refer to my article describing the ICON Pro RPM gauge menu selections.

    Navigate to EDIT --> DATA SOURCES --> ANALOGUE ---> P1-6

Here the P1-6 is the particular input being used in this example. If another input is used, navigate to that input.

    Set the P1-6 input to the TRIM option.

    Check all the other inputs and verify they are NOT set to the TRIM option.

This completes the selection of the input connection process. Now the type of sender must be configured.

    Navigate to EDIT --> DATA SOURCES --> TRIM ---> SELECT SNDR

    Set the sender type to EVINRUDE

This completes the configuration of the ICON Pro RPM gauge for an analogue input of a trim sender. In the example we have used the circuit at P1-6, but there are five circuit available, and any of them can be used. The three circuits available at P1 are preferred because in most cases there will not be a connector provided for P2, where the other two circuits are available. In a similar manner, the analogue inputs can be configured for other types of input.

Another common use for ICON Pro RPM gauge analog inputs is for a tank level input from a tank level resistive type sender. For tank senders, the configuration of the type of sender is selected under the appropriate TANK menu. The number of TANK menus available depends on how the ICON Pro RPM gauge was initially configured under the NUMBER OF TANKS configuration menu of the initialization process.

For each FUEL TANK that was configured, an associated option in the menu will appear at

    EDIT --> FUEL SET UP ---> TANK [number] --> DATA SOURCE

The choices will be NMEA, EU10-180, and US240-33. Choose the type of sender at this menu option.

The tank sender is then wired to an analogue input on the ICON Pro RPM gauge. Again, choose the particular input as described above. For example if the P1-7 input is used, then

    Navigate to EDIT --> DATA SOURCES --> ANALOGUE ---> P1-7
    Set the P1-7 input to the FUEL option.
