Hey David, I ran a 40hp Nissan on my 13 Whaler and never had any problems.Nissan outboards are made by Tohatsu.I choose not to buy one for my previous 17ft Whaler because there are so few dealers to service them. See Ya,Ed Stone |

David, I have owned a Tohatsu 18hp on a Whaler 11, and a 40hp on a 13... never had a single problem and both engines started, ran well and were strong for their hp ratings.. easy maint also, everyting accessible.. Clark |

i have had a 13'whaler with a three cylinder tohatsu.first time out sking my bosses son gunned it {with out a skier }and flipped it.but not in the way you would think.instead of flipping lenght ways it rolled over.after this the kids would do it on purpose they thought it was fun.that was until the cost guard was called.from what i figured it was more horsepower than they stated or three cylinders of torque.but you could really pull a skier.this was three years ago i dont know if they changed motor design.but at that time they offered two and three cylinder configurations. |

Tohatsu is Japan`s oldest outboard mfr. They are favorites of Japanese fishermen and are known for their salt water durability. Tohatsu makes all Nissan outboards and now makes Mercury outboards up to 5 hp. Tohatsu relies on word of mouth advertising by satisfied customers, so you will find very few ads in publications. Their motors are modern designs with features such as loop charging, thru hub exhaust, oil injection, etc. I run a 50 Tohatsu on a Dell Quay 13 (virtually identical to a 13 Whaler). My boat tops out at 49 mph and has never been outrun by another 50. Tohatsu in the U.S. is headquartered in Carrollton, TX. Check out their website. |

Tohatsu's does indeed make ALL the small outboards for all the major manufacturers incuding Nissan, Evinscrewed etc. BUT to say they are of "modern design" is pushing the definition. They are all carbureted and were state of the art about 15 years ago... I would consider one of the new Yamaha 4 strokes if I were you. Yeah they're more money, but they're that much better.Quiet with extremely good fuel efficiency. My 2 cents... jk |
