Hello All,Looking for a good rough water whaler in the 17-20 ft range. Needs to be center console. It sounds like from reading a lot of posts that a 81-90 outrage would be the best choice. Is that span of years correct for the deeper V hull design? What outboard would get me to 40mph? People have been saying that the Honda's as the brand are very nice and reliable...any thoughts? Thanks in advance.

Hi "MichWhaler",Welcome to the forum. The first year of the 20 deep V Outrage was 1978. That was there first year of the deep V, I believe. I think you can go all the way up to 1993 maybe even later to find the "classic" deep V hull on Outrages. Maybe Larry Goltz who is the expert on BW's history will shed more light on the subject for you. Regards, Thomas |

Tom's info is correct, with 1993 the last year of the 22's & 25's (although 1993 models are very hard to find). The 17 Outrage & 18 Outrage of the series (called a 19 beginning in 1990, and with a new interior in 1992) were made through 1995. |

Here's what I know about the lifespan of the 18 Outrage hull. It was designed sometime in 1981, and was first offered as a mid-year model in either 1982 or 1983. Standard equipment included the regular Outrage/Montauk console and twin swivel pilot chairs, and it had teak gunwales. This model continued basically unchanged thru 1991, but beginning in 1990 they renamed it a "19 Outrage" and the standard gunwales were now fiberglass, with teak being an extra cost option. In 1991 the center console design changed, now using the console from the newly introduced 17 Outrage instead of the console from the Montauk. Popular options found on these are the Reversible Pilot Seat instead of the chairs, a front cooler seat, a Stern Seat, a bow pulpit option (quite rare), and side rails. Full Mills canvas was also available. In 1992, the interior hull mold was changed, and an interior liner panel also was added, increasing hull weight from 1250LB to 1900LB. This was called the "19 Outrage II", with a revised transom allowing only a single engine and a white exterior hull (still original design) with some gray interior colors. In 1992 Whaler advertised that the redesigned boat had increased utility, with new console, storage and interior seating configurations, and cost $1000 less than the 1991 model. It's last year was 1995, after which this Classic hull design only became available from the Commercial Products Division. |
