My 1962 17 went to the glass shop today, and will be fitted with a new 90 horse Johnson (carbs and oil injection) when done. I live in the Sarasota FL area, and will be fishing the Gulf. I hope to be able to fish up to 15 miles out. It has a 20 gallon tank under the console, which I plan to retain. What kind of range can I expect? What can I expect for top speed with a lightly loaded hull on calm water?

Hey Eric, After you breakin your new motor I would guess 45mph with a properly trimmed out motor. As far as range goes, if your careful to pick out good days I would say 15 miles would work.Ive fished south of egmont channel in 40 ft. of water and have caught some nice grouper.Good luck! keep us posted. Eric, Ed is about right on potential top speed... your rig should get between 3 and 5 miles per gallon... I have a friend with a 17 Newport and a 90 Johnson which recently got almost 5 mpg over approx. 400 mile cruise.. we cruised at around 25-28mph and his engine was turning about 3800rpm... happy Whalin'....
