I have recently purchased a Dauntless 18' equiped with 1999 Optimax 135 engine. I would like to know about the reliability of this engine, and weather I need to consider purchasing an extended warantee. The warantee is a bit pricy, so I would appreciate any feedback or advice.

Med, I have a 2000 opti 135 and plan to buy the extended warranty... based on the investment $ I put out to buy it and the fact that anything mechanical can fail, whether Merc, Yam, Omc or whatever... if you know the privious owners care and maint of the engine that would give you some insight also... additionally the 135 is based on the V6 153cubic inch (2.5 liters) block, same as the carb/efi 200hp and in my opinion should be bullet proof if operated reasonably and not run constantly at 6200 rpm at rev limiter speed, heh, heh!!! The engine has what's called "the guardian system" which will cut rpm and/or shut down if temp, oil or other systems require. Also your Merc dealer can plug in a diagnostic computer and read the history of the engines alarms and failure codes if any and will even print out an rpm history, acutal engine hrs... etc...etc... would be good to run this computer look-see... BTW, I bought my engine new and it has performed flawlessly for almost 200 hrs... I will keep my fingers crossed... good luck... Clark.. The Old Man and the Sea

Med, while I'm not a fan of extended warranties, is this extended warranty offered from Mercury Marine or from some company the dealer represents? While I don't believe the price of the one offered by Mercury is negotiable, any offered by the dealer is; ususally you can get it for half of what he's quoting.
Make sure you read the fine print to know what's covered and not. Usually if a major component doesn't fail within the warranty period it won't fail during the extended warranty perior either. Good luck. Don

I should have clarified that I will buy the Mercury "MercGuard" factory extended warranty only! I would not ever buy a non-factory warranty, period... Don makes a good point.... Happy Whalin'.. Clark

I had to use the motor warranty on a johnson
outboard and I was glad I had it.The boat I
bought had the warranty and I had it
transferred for $40.They had to replace
the power head. After saving over 2000
dollars I'm sold on extended Warrantys.

I have twin 99 Optimax on my "sweet" 1994 Outrage 25 and love them. When I repowered it last year, I put hydraulic jack plates, and have never had an problem. I am really impressed with these motors. Having said that, I WOULD purchase the factory warranty. After all, its an outboard motor!

QBrennan: I remember seeing an earlier 25 Outrage (3/4" jointed bow rail) docked in the Sister Bay Marina two summers ago, with single OMC V-8 on it. Not too many 25's up in Door County, so wondered if this could be yours, before it was repowered. There are a few other Whaler owners here who also boat up there. Great boating territory.
