Any advice on deciding between a Mills fly top and a sun top for a 1999 17 Outrage? The fly top is smaller and can accept dodger, windshield, and curtains. Fly top is 674, sun top 791 both less 10%. Fly top has two stainless pole supports and sun top has three.

How do the tops stow? Over bow locker? In an upright postion?

Also, which color ? Standard Pacific Blue? - is the color used on classic whalers.

Ah, you've opened up pandora's box with this one, Dan-I expect there will be a lot of responses-

I have both for my '92 Outrage 22'- the fly top when connected with the rest of the enclosure system is a phenomenal set-up for bad weather, but for my purposes in hot weather (Michigan and North Channel in the summer, Florida in the spring), the sun top fills the bill and the fly top does not. So I've currently got hinge slides for both in the track on the gunwales, and can quickly change one out for the other (they have to stop at different places along the track when up). The fly top with various degrees of enclosure is unbeatable in cold or wet weather. I am working out schemes over the winter to see if I can customize the suntop to accept the rest of the system...we'll see...

On the 22', both tops stop at the same point at the forward end of the track when stowing, and they both nest below the gunwales on the anchor locker. Very neat and out of the way.

Good luck,

Kingfish

Dan -- flying top since your boating is on the Sound and you'll probably want to get the rest of the stuff ---

Stows forward folded down of the bow locker.

Pacific blue is the current choice but Mills informed me quite a few are sold in the Sunbrella "toast" which is a canvas tan color --- your choice the "tan" was used on the early Whalers either would look nice ---

I wasn't aware Mills had designed Flying Top Sets (forward shelter, fly top & connecting windshield) for the newer (post Classic) Outrages. BW does not indicate this availability. But this is good news for those owners, as this equipment greatly increases the all-weather capability of these boats. I have always thought that one of the shortcomings of the new Outrages was the inability to get Mills canvas enclosures.

Assuming you don't have the luxury of buying
both tops like Kingfish has done(!), I would say first choice should be the flying top, for the reasons BigZ has given. I use the Flying Top in the FL tropical sun, and it works fine, assuming you don't have a boat-load of people.
