I installed an eight foot vhf antenna to my handheld hummingbird vhf using a tnc to pl-259 adapter. Has anybody tried this. I read somewhere that antenna height made more difference than watts in these radios. Will this significantly increase my range. Dennis

The higher your antenna is above the water the longer your range will be, limited to the wattage of your radio.

The 8' whip takes the power of the radio
and concentrates it more or less horizontally
while the rubber ducky antenna on the HT
radiates in more or less all directions.

In addition, VHF is, more or less, line of
sight. If the 8' antenna is higher than
where you would hold the rubber ducky, that
would give more range too.

It should make a significant difference
in range. A buddy put an 8' whip on his
13' inflatable, and he gets significanty
more traffic.
