I have purchased a 1983 model 19' Whaler with a 150 hp Johnson. I want to know more about this particular boat. It looks like a Montauk and was operated by the local Sheriff at one of our lakes. Are there special order Whalers that police departments purchase or is this a type of boat that is no longer made?

Randell, this boat is probably a Outrage model & the hull could be a commerical hull, since it was a law enforcement boat. Get the serial # & contact BW and they should be able to pinpoint it for you.

In 1983, BW produced a 20' hull in two versions: Outrage and Revenge; 18's in three versions: Outrage, Newport and GTX; and finally 17's in three versions: Montauk, Newport and Sport (actually there was a 17' bare boat)

The 20 foot hull was rated at 180hp; the 18' at 150hp for the Outrage, 100 for the Newport (the GTX was I/O); and the 17' was rated for 100hp, unless it was a bareboat 17, and that was rated for 50hp.

Does it have an internal or external fuel tank, and teak gunnels? The 20 and 18 Outrages will have that, while the 17' Montauk will not.

There was no 19' produced that year.

I'll bet that you probably have a 18' or 20' Outrage since it has a 150 on it.

One way to quick check if it has commercial hull specs (most, but not all goverment boats were ordered, not floor/instock bought. They would have normally ordered the commercial spec, 175 lbs more resin and glass) is to look right alongside the Whaler decal for either a red or black solid dot about 1/2" - 3/4" in diameter thats not a sticker, but part of the gelcoat. That indicated a commercial spec'ed hull.

Best - Don
