I just put some $ down on a 1978 35 hp Johnson, electric start, with controls, fuel line, gas tank, ignition switch, and installed for 1k. These smaller motors are hot items in my area. It is going to run on our 13' BW. I am hopefully looking for positive feed back on this motor. Any input or experience on this motor would be appreciated.

I had the same year motor on my first 13" Sport, a 67. I bought the boat and motor in 83 after it had been used for many years on the jersey shore. The motor served me well for at least 5 more years before I sold it to our marina for their work boat where it was abused for at least another six or seven years. The only problem I ever really had witht that motor was the power pack, which I replaced once within the first year I ownwed it. It was a good motor and held up well to a lot of full throttle wake jumping and general abuse.

Should be a good motor for the boat. But 1K sounds a bit high for a 1978 motor with limited parts availability. I would look around a bit. Don't know what area you are in and the market there but here in the N.W. you could do a lot better for that price.

I had a '77 Evinrude 35, which is the same motor, on a 13. The motor was nearly bullet proof. As I recall, in 11 years of ownership, I had to replace the power pack and the coils once. Make sure you change the water pump at least every other year. Overall, its a pretty good motor for the 13.

I would put another mark in the plus column. I have a 85' 35hp Johnson that I bought on used with an 85' 13 Sport last year. I had the engine in to fix a spun prop. When I asked the mechanic in the beginning if the problem could be something worse, he said it is rare that something big goes wrong with these engines. Two other mechanics also told me these small Johnsons/Evinrudes were very reliable engines.

So maybe 1K is a lot, I don't know. Seems if I had to buy another used engine tomorrow I would be happy to only spend 1K to get a reliable engine no matter the year. But as others commented, the availability of parts could be an issue.
