Two very ironic things happened today, both related to the article I just wrote on Whaler company history.

First, I was listening to the radio on the drive home and heard a commercial for NORDIC TRACK! Former Whaler owner CML-Group recently sold off that company, and here they are, with new owners, back advertising on the radio!

Next, when I got home tonight there was a new promotional flyer from the local Sea Ray/Whaler dealer. Whalers are getting much better coverage than in last year's pre-boat-show issue. This time there are two boats featured, the big 34-Defiance and the Conquest-26. This dealer is not exactly a trailer-boat specialist.

No testimonials about the virtues of having a clothes dryer aboard, but they do mention the nine air conditioning units on the 68-foot Sea Ray.

They had two Whalers in the mix of seven boats featured in the brochure, which is encouraging.

I just thought it was rather odd that I got the mailer a day or two after commenting about the one from last year.

Nine A/C units, or nine A/C vents?

Nine units doesn't make sense. I've been
on 110' boats in the tropics with three
units, that were chilly, and with one unit
that were quite tolerable.

Both the 34 Defiance and the 26 Conquest are being pushed hard by the Company. Sales of the Defiance have been terrible, mostly because of it's very high price, and dealers are stuck with inventory they had to take. The word is that true Sea Ray Dealers think the boat makes no sense, when they can sell one of their same sized Sea Rays for about half as much. And the 26 conquest IS a Sea Ray Express Cruiser, complete with wrap around lounge seat, so they probably love that model!

Sorry to say the Defiance primarily due to the price tag has been a poor seller but when compared to a similarly equipped Cabo35 the price isn't an issue (only a fool of a dealer would have brought any stock of Defiance boats in --- maybe one for diplay/sales use but a "stock" hardly)-- SeaRay doesn't offer a boat with this quality or class --- the old late 80's 31 Whaler inboard was also a poor seller!

Actually my Commodore and I both liked the helm port wrap around seat on the 28 which is the same on the 26, nice for everyone on board to have a comfortable place out of the weather ---

As they say to each his own --- Z
