I have a 1971 Katama that I was told was a commerical hull. It has a red dot about 1" dia. on both sides of the hull by the Whaler decals. The dots are translucent and made as part of the hull. After reading in the History section it stated that the commerical hull was not started until 1983.Does anyone know anything about this hull?

You have the "Workboat Specifications" hull option, which for years was shown in the Whaler catalogs for the 16/17's "adds 150 pounds of resin and glass to the hull". The weights were different for each hull size. This option was also recommended for a boat to be used for commercial purposes.

From the earliest days, any recreational Whaler 13' and up, could be ordered with this option. In 1986, this option cost an additional $1000 for a 17. For an Outrage 25, it cost $2512 for an additional 275 lbs of resin and glass. On the CPD boats, this was included as a standard feature.

I think this option disappeared on the recreational Whalers when the new hull shapes started coming out in 1991, but I'm not sure.
