Just a quick note to give an progress report to anyone interested in my restoration project. The Whaler is a 1977 Outrage 19', with a 1986 150 HP Yamaha. Boat has been in storage for about 10 years, with absolutely NO maintenance done on it.
The first thing I did was to buy a new trailer, because the old one had rotted out beneath the boat.
The whaler was stored in a boat yard with a full cover over it, but it was still incredably dirty. I gave it a bath using Soft scrub with bleach and scotch brite scouring pads. This worked like a charm. The gel coat is in good condition considering the vintage of the boat, I started outboard work last week, changing out the oil in the oil-injection system. Replaced all the plugs, and just for kicks I tried to turn the motor over yesterday. The first time nothing, but the second time the motor turned over fine, it made no unusual sounds, but I am still going to have a mechanic give it a look over.

Good luck. Sounds like one of those Whaler projects we love (at least when it's complete). Rex

Update: I have had a mechanic look over the engine for me, here is what he said. The carburetors need to be re-built, the powerhead needs to be pulled because the drive shaft has rusted and the motor is locked into gear. The control cables from the engine to the throttle need to be replaced because they has disintegrated. Steering needs to be replaced. The oil injection system needs to be overhauled because the oil pump does not shut off when the key is on.

Any thoughts or comments would be appreciated from anyone with experience regarding outboards
