The announcement appears to be dated April 18, 2001, making it about five weeks old.

Did it just appear recently?

Don't know when it first appeared, as I just saw it yesterday. Actually had a number of hits when searching for '2002 Yamaha 4-stroke' on the web.

Not sure why it was announced in Austrailia in April, but would speculate that perhaps it has something to do with the season, as April is their Autumn. If they announced the motor in June/July, I believe it would be mid-winter... Only a marketing guess.

Bottom line (for me anyway), the 225 4-stroke looks sweet. Saw one article that suggested that it offered double the fuel mileage over it's 2-stroke counterpart. I seriously doubt if that's true. My 25' with new 2001 Yamaha 225 gets about 2.7 mph at a 4000 rpm cruise. If I could bump that up by ~1 mpg, have no oil to buy, no smoke, have the same performance, and be (much) quieter, it's a no-brainer. I'd plunk down my cash today for the swap..

as always, thanks

2.7 mpH? It should go a lot faster than
that. You did unstrap the boat from the
trailer, right? ;-)
