Finally finish the project, took 7 months but worth every minute. The old 78 Mercury 90 ran like a top, never missed a beat. Put about 2 hours on it, ran all over the lake. I decided to double oil it the first tank since it hasn't run since 1982. Varied speed often and never opened it up. I am treating it like a new engine for the first tank. I have posted pictures of the finished project at:

Fantastic job Zach and great story. I am a big fan of the "found-in-barn-time-warp" method of starting a nice restoration project. I did the same on a '63 Impala SS and a '73 Jeep CJ-5. I applaud your decision to revive the old Merc -- many would have seen those wasp nests and gone directly to the outboard shop to find a new one. Congratulations on a job well done.

Thanks all, the outside has new gelcoat, the inside has been buffed out 3-4 times. It has been a fun project. Will do it again if I get another project. Zack

Correcting the url to pictures.
