Whaler says not to put a T-top on a Montauk -- safety issues -- the boat could tip -- the boat isn't heavy enough. Plus, the console on Montauks isn't through bolted to deck and there isn't enough space under deck to affix back plates for T-top legs. The smallest boat Whaler says they would put a T-top on is the newer Outrage 18' and larger models. My first Montauk had a T-top that pulled up out of the deck and losened the console, too. Bad news.

Check out the new Montauk T-Topless ... it install in minutes (no holes to drill), and provides better clearance than a bimini, easy fishing (no straps), allows easy entry/exit at the dock and you can lower it in seconds to fit in your garage or under a boat cover.

The Montauk 17 T-Topless has been completely redesigned to:
=> allow the use of the front rod holders,
=> fold down to fit under the standard boat cover.

Check it out at

There seem to be varying opinions about Montauks and T-tops. Andy (Fishcop) has a nice one on his, maybe he'll chime in.

I've never ridden on it, but I've seen his in person and it looked very functional. It put some ideas in my head that I haven't yet acted on.

Can we clarify the model. Are you referring to a classic Montauk or a Montauk 170.

Very Old Hashed and Re-Hashed topic...but my T-top from Salt Shaker Marine has been on my 1986 Montauk for 22 years with no problems. Aluminum w/canvas top and only mounted to the console.

If one was concerned with the addition of a T-top on a Classic Montauk, then I would stick to the experts at Boston Whaler and on this forum.

Just my .02 cents.

BTW, Looks like there is a nice t-top for sale in the Marketplace that came off a 1980's Montauk in CA.

I doubt "G" will be responding CBO. He started this post in 3/2001.

Doh! Missed that. I was thinking George doesn't have a Montauk, he has a Outrage.
