1983 Whaler 18 Outrage Sounding on page 40 of Cetacea is an AWESOME photo! I've done some similar things by accident, but not that high! Unbelievable. Thanks Jim for posting that super shot. Mav

I agree, OUTRAGEOUS shot!

I think we ought to have a caption contest for that photo.

Here are some that come to mind:
"Going up!"
(or maybe) "Going down!"
"We have lift off!"
"Stress crack? What stress crack?"
"Too fast?"
"I think we need a bigger boat!"

It's not sounding, it's spyhopping.

Sounding is when the whale dives deep.
Spyhopping is when it goes straight up and
has a good look around.

Chuck, you're right, it's not sounding. Actually, I think jimh meant "breaching" (the leaping of a whale from the water), a rather appropriate term, I can assure you.
