I just purchased a 1980 Sport 13 with a 35hp Evinrude of approx. the same vintage, although I don't know it's exact year. While cleaning the boat up this last weekend I was running the motor to flush its cooling system with fresh water. I had the cowling off to try and locate the thermostat for inspection. I was unclear as to it's location or even if it is originally equipped with one. I haven't purchased a manual for the motor but plan to at the first opportunity. Is anyone familiar with this motor? Can you guide me in the right direction? Thanks for such a great site!

if it is running cool, do not mess with it. If it is running REAL cool, it is probably missing.

My OMC manual covers 1984 Evinrude engines. The 35 has a cylinder head water cover which must be removed for access to the thermostat. The thermostat sits on the cylinder head.
Probably not a good idea to fool with it unless you have a manual and all the gasket and seal material you'd probably have to replace if you took off the cover.

Thanks for the info. I have ordered a manual off the internet. I had a feeling that it was located under the cyl. head after looking carefully at the head/ cylinder design. Unsure at this point if I will attempt to remove the head, as I have had considerable experience with stainless to alluminum welding together on a previous boats outdrive that turned into a major headache.
