I just bought a 1997 30 hp Evinrude for my 13ft Classic. The motor didn't come with any literature, so I'm kind of clueless about how often I should be changing the Gear Lube in the lower unit. I use the motor (and boat) in both salt and fresh water.

thanks in advance for you help! I'd hate to trash the motor out of ignorance.

You should try an Evinrude dealer to see
if they can get you an owner's manual.
There's lots good stuff in there.

I change mine every 100 hours.
If the motor was used, change it now, before
you run it. That way you KNOW it's good.

Thanks Chuck. Good advice. I was just hoping someone had someone could get me started. I'll change the lube this weekend since I'm planning a full week of boating fun. I've got some SAE 80-90 lube. Any idea if that is standard for modern outboards, or should I be using something else?

If you live in colder climates, do it every fall before you winterize. If water is in there and it freezes, good by lower unit. Go to marine sytore and but a tube or 2 of the lower unit lube. is your lube marine or auto. If marine use that.

You should use OMC's recommended lower unit
lube. They have two different ones, at least.
There's Ultra HPF (which is what my '97 90HP
specs) and another, older one. You need that
owner's manual.

Good point, bigshot, about freezing climes.
I'm in Sunny California.

i run synthetic but it does not mix well with reg oil so if it had reg in it, run regular.
