I don't know if anyone cares but i just found out that I have a Sakonnet not a nauset i was e-mailed back from Chuck Bennett. My question is my throttle is sometimes hard to engage the mechanic told me it was fine that it didn't need to be replaced. But is their any way to loosen it up it feel sometimes I am going to break it off the center consule to engage forward.

Also on the original pictures were those Mahagany Battery boxes on the gunnel.

If u r referring to the boxes hanging off the rails-they are lockable fishing rod boxes.

Disconnect throttle cable at engine. If it is still tight, your cable is going. If it is lose, your linkage is binding somewhere on the motor, etc.

Dont know what type of motor you have but it sound like your shift shaft is corroded and needs to be cleaned and the seals replaced. If it is an omc it is a fairly common problem so I have heard form my mechanic.

I have a 1984-85 merc 90 horse. I have brought it to the local dealer he said that their was nothing wrong with it and it did seem better when I got the boat back from the shop. I took it out the other day and the problem occured again you have to really force the control to engage it also seems I have 2 speeds slow or fast it very hard to find a medium speed!!! I really have to play with the throttle. Is this normal for an older control.

Joem, what did I tell Ya. A 86 inline should shift like butter. It is your cable(repplace both cause the other will go soon). To double check, do what I said.

I have the same engines on my 18 Outrage. The throttle and shift cables work very easily. I would install a new set of cables, and be sure you have Merc's instructions for installing the cables properly. If throttle cable is not done correctly, SHIFT cable will bind. Buy Teleflex cables, or Mercury's own brand. Can't believe a Dealer couldn't figure this one out for you. If none of this works, engine control unit is bad, or engine needs work.
