I saw this add in the local paper, 17 foot Boston Whaler center console with Cox trailer in excelent condition. I am saving up to get a boat (yes Whaler) maybe next year but this add caught my eye. I called the number and spoke to the owner, I asked him what model Whaler was he selling, he did not know. I thought to myself, he is the owner of the boat but has no idea what model it is. I then asked him what motor is on the boat, he said it is a black one. I can see that I am getting no where fast and as he was only 20 minutes away I would go to see his mistery boat. At first glance I knew it was a Montauk with a Merc. outboard. The boat was in poor shape NOT excelent condition as was listed. The motor (90hp)had no plugs in it and looked beat up. I was going to ask what year it was but I figured he would not have a clue. It looked like an earily 80's vintage. I said to him, "your add said it was in excelent condition, do you think it looks that good". He said it looks fine, but for $2900.00 I was still a little interested. That was till I steped on to the boat, the deck was real springy and soft feeling. I told him good luck selling it and left in a hurry. I knew the add was too good to be true, has this happened to you?

While looking for a whaler, I drove a long distance to look at what was posted on the Internet boat trader as a 1989 McKee 19’ with pictures. I talked to the owner 3 times and asked him many questions. I drive out there, and it is nothing of what he said. It was a MITCH CRAFT not a McKee and it was in very, very poor shape. It did look like a 18’ McKee V bottom in the pictures. When I said, “you said that this was a McKee”. He said that it was made by on of a brother of the Mckees, then he got mad when I said that it is not even close to a McKee, the nerve of him to advertise it as a McKee. I am glad I waited, I got a 1978 Montauk with 1991 100 hp Johnson 2 weeks ago for a steal. All teak and canvas, garage kept. It was the 3rd whaler 17’ I had looked at. Good look, Archie

Have No idea how many times that has happened. One guy said it was a 1990, got there and it was blue inside, did not even get out of the car(hour ride). Another was 78 and it too was blue but had a 78 25hp Johnson(no foot). He told me excellent condition. I was so infuriated after an 1 1/2 drive that I figured I would humor him. I asked if he dragged it here or has it been in that condition longer. Offered him $500 and upon really offending him he walked away. Those are just a couple of MANY! Should be able to fine them for wasting your time and lying. When I read the add to my current Whaler I thought it was too good to be true and it was. I got him $1000 cheaper than his FIRM price on top of it, Love a good deal and a bitter divorce.
