As a Honolulu Firefighter we respond to a lot of boater in distress call in the famous Molokai Channel. Well yesterday we got one from a guy in his new 13 sport with the 25hp Merc on it. The call was call for help 2 mile out in the channel and it was rolling. White caps every. He had a cell phone and a gps.. He gave us his coordinates and we were able to zero in on him. Luckily he got his motor restarted and had a real sleigh ride back in to the bay.Riding down 25 foot waves. The 13 sport looked like a small surfboard on those big swells. When we got him in we asked him what he was thinking. He said he was just fishing and got too far out. This guy was way out side the limits of comon sense. He made it in but we spent $3000 easy finding and following him in. The boat was so small that when he came in it listed to the side he was seated alot (he was a big guy). He was shaken but alive. The boat might not have sunk but he would have.

I hope you and the boys at the department are going to present this dopey fat bastard with a bill for $3,000.
I have a friend on the ski patrol at a western resort where they are constantly going out to rescue stupid little suburban kids (mostly snowboarders) who have gone out of bounds trying to be "extreme" like they see in the magazines.
They bill the little fools, plus fines, or the next of kin, if dead.
Helicopters really run up the bill!

If your motor won't start, the situation and people can get nasty real fast.

I don't think this guy has any common sense. It's been rough between the channels this past few weeks. I have a 13 whaler that I use to troll around Molokini Island (about two miles offshore)off of Maui. Got to be smart and listen to the weather report. The Hawaiian waters can change very quickly.
