Have a chance to buy a '99 Dauntless 14' from a motivated seller for a below market price. Don't know much about this hull. Does anyone have any opinions? Thanks.

I have a '99 Dauntless 14 with a '99 75hp Merc 2 stroke. I love the boat. It is easy to tow, easy to launch, easy to operate. It is also good on fuel.

I use it for fishing on lakes and in Pugent Sound (salt). Ride is good, modified Deep V cuts through chop, runs about 38- 40mph WOT.

Great fishing boat for 2, 3 if necessary.

Depending on what you want the boat for, I think you will like it. Whalertosh has a 2000/2001 and am sure he will also reply.

What are they asking for the Dauntless?

Also go to the "post classic" board, change the view to show the last 75 - 100 days and you can find a lot of info on Whalertosh's purchase. His desires, conclusions on the Dauntless 14. Think they will help in your decision.

He will sell for 10,000, maybe less. Boat has been in water once. Thanks for the reply.

Mike,

What about the engine, trailer, options.

It is a galvanized trailer. The motor is a Mercury 60HP. I'm not sure if it is a 2 or 4 stroke. He said the motor has 3 cylinders. Not sure what that means.

Thanks for the heads up on the postings. Very informative. What a great site to take advantage of so much experience without being sold anything!

Mike,

Should be a 60hp 2 stroke. Any electronics, other options? Sounds like a really good deal.

I'm not sure. Have not seen the boat yet as it is about 100 miles from here. Will go tomorrow. It has a fishfinder and I think it has the bow seat.

Mike,

Sorry I joined in late, my ISP is having problems.

Look the boat over carefully. The 60 HP is a 2 stroke if it has 3 cylinders. I highly doubt it is a 4-stroke. Mercury only introduced the 60 HP 4-stroke for 2001. I was lucky in that the boat that I bought didn't have a motor and the dealer got a 60 HP 4-stroke on a Montauk. He had a 90 HP 4-stroke that he put on the Montauk. One of those perfect timing deals. If there is an oil fill on the couwling for 2-stroke oil, it is a two stroke.

Anyway, if the boat, motor and trailer are in good shape $10K is a steal. Pin him down as to why he is selling. you need a specific reason why he is lower than average on the price.

As far as the boat goes, I love mine. for what I use it for it is perfect. Don't expect it to be an Outrage though. Inland and near shore it will be a gem. Easy to handle by oneself, easy to tow, nice seat and console, fits in most garages.

P.S.

The front deck is big enough to use a casting platform for fly fishing. The boat will roll more than a true flats boat, anf the console may be a little high. But, since you like fly fishing you could probably use it for that purpose.

P.S. II

I think that there was a recall on some of the Dauntless 14s. it wasn't anything to worry about as far as buying the boat, but if you do go and get the boat you might want to check with Boston Whaler to see if it has been done. Has to do with the fuel fill, and the fix does take care of the problem completely.

Was wondering when you would post. Seems we may have a growing group here with the Dauntless 14. How ya bee. Took the Yukon II out salmon fishing last Sat. No fish but had a ball. Whaling in the PNW is great.

Greg,

Not only is there a possible third member, but there seems to be general run on Dauntless 14s. My local dealer sold his other 2000, and he is searching for another one for another customer.

Maybe Whaler pulled the plug on these too soon?

One thing is for sure if Mike does get his he will have something unique.

I will be taking Whaletosh out this weekend for the first time with the intention of getting fish slime on it. I will probably be going out of St. Joe Michigan, there have been some, Skamania Steelhead showing up at some of the ports.

One last P.S. to Mike. Make sure that it is a Duantless 14 and not a Dauntless 15. some sellers either knowingly or not are calling Dauntless 15s Dauntless 14s; even saw one Dauntless 13 misslabeled on on Boat Trader Online. Duantless 14s were made in 1999 and 2000, no other years. I belive that Dauntless 15s were made in 1999, but dropped in 2000. A Dauntless 14 is bigger, more stable, and comfortable boat than a Dauntless 15. the LOA is tha only dimension where the 15 is greater than the 14, and it isn't much. These are two distinctly different boats. $10K for a 14 is a steal (if in good shape), $10K for a 15 is reasonable.

Thanks for all the input. Unfortunately, work and vacation is prohibiting me from getting out to see the boat until little over a week. Will let you know how it turns out.

Everytime I delayed I missed the boat- so to speak.
These things sell fast and usually wind up with a friend or Neighbor. I looked for 2 years gave up and bought a new one (16 Dauntless)

$10k, should be gone already! If not sold by next week do not bother cause something is wrong. That is if the boat is advertised. Go tonight or keep looking in my opinion.

Price was not advertised in the ad, only best offer. So I asked the guy what he would consider as a best offer.

Early bird gets the worm. If you want it, you better go like yesterday cause it will sell to the 1st buyer with $$$.
