I want to add 2 rod holders on my '01 Montauk
to face aft from the side rails. I am looking at the clamp on type. What size are the rails (3/4 or 1 in.)? Can anybody recommend a make or model of rod holder?
Thanks for the help.

The rails are 3/4" and I'd suggest Perko SS mounts.

I have six Perko rod holders on my 16-7. the ss clamp on types are great. I have them mounted on the vertical supports, four on the stern and two on the bow. They cost about $35 each at West Marine. You probably don't need the heavy duty ones which are about $60 each. JIM

check Boat Us as well, they put the Perko units on sale a lot.

I just sold my Perkos and purchased 4 Lee Clamp on - Chrome over Brass. ~$55.00 each. The SS Perkos are nice, the Chrome of Brass Perkos are really nice, the Chrome of Brass Lees are in my opinion the Best. But You really can't go wrong with any of them.

I agree with "wpr". Look at the Lee's, since you're only buying two. They are the highest quality, and were used by BW as rail mounted rod holder options on the Montauks and Outrages. I have some that are 20 years old, and still look like new. They will fit either a 7/8" or 1" rail interchangeably.

In the "old" days, BW only offered first class options on their boats, which is partly where their reputation for overall excellence came from. Lee's was the only choice in fishing equipment options, both in rod holders and outriggers. Nowadays, the options are of lower quality, a notch down from top of the line. Nickel and dime savings, if you ask me, but that's what is being done.

Further, the Tarpon insignia is really classy. Overall quality is excellent. You spent Major $$ for the Montauk, donít hold back on the rod holders. I shopped around, West marine had them special order for over $70. I purchased them from Bass Pro Shops via phone for a little less than $55 each. (just in the past month)

Good Luck

On my Montauk I prefer the Tempress rail mounts. They are removable, only leaving the small rail mount. They adjust verticly and rotate. Not as nice looking as the Lee's but very functional.

Get the Lee clamp-on rod holders. They fit the 7/8" diameter (not 3/4") rails on the Whalers and they also fit 1" rails (though not as neatly).

The Lees are the highest quality bar none, just as lhg and wpr indicate. When you clamp them on they stay put, period. They are also incredibly durable and beautiful to boot. I bought my first pair when I got my first Montauk in 1981 (it seemed they were painfully expensive at $50 each) but I still have them after putting them on the two subsequent Whalers I've owned and you cannot tell them from the pair that I bought much more recently. God, I love well made hardware! You really do get what you pay for.
