What type of labor is associated with adding this transducer to my current Lowarance x65? The dealer said it may take 2hours at $69 ph.

1-3 hrs is about right. It really depends on the hull and how fussy you are routing and securing the wiring. I am very fussy, but I also work as an electrinics tech, this instalation on an average Whaler would take me about 1 to 1-1/2 hours.

I would encurage you to do this your self. it is very simple. Lowrance made it really easy. Mount the transducer on the transom; use 3M 5200 to seal the screws. Rout the cable up to the console; you can use the same rout as the sonar cable. Hook up the cable, Lowrance provides a Y setup at the end of the speed/temp tranducer. Secure the excess cable with wire ties. It is that simple. Trust me you can do it and save bundle on the installation.

This is a simple install. Here is what you need:

--Stainless steel screws (for some reason Lowrance doesn't provide mounting screws with the Speed/Temp transducer; it does with the sonar transducer).

--Marine caulk or sealant--just a little bit

--Drill, Bits, Screwdriver

Locate the transducer according to the instructions. Typically the Speed/Temp transducer is on the opposite side of the engine from the sonar transducer.

Mark the holes and drill first one. Use a larger bit by hand to countersink the hole slightly so that the gelcoat is removed to a larger diameter than the laminate. This is important. If you don't remove the gelcoat you will likely crack it when you put the screw in place.

I carefully drill the hole and try threading the self-taping sheet-metal screw in place, without the transducer, to get a feel for the hole size. Don't make it too small or the screw will pulverize the laminate as it threads. Don't make it too big or the screw will not have good purchase. The right size will be that which makes the screw fit nice and tight in the hole, but not require excessive force.

By all means use a Phillips Pan Head Stainless Screw. Probably #8 about 3/4 inch long will be right.

After you drill the first hole and test thread the screw, take the screw out and mount the transducer. Check how the markings for the other holes fit. Adjust as necessary if your first hole was a bit off.

Drill the next hole and thread screw almost home. Repeat for holes three and four.

When you are all set with the holes, take the screws out and coat them with caulk or sealant. A little tube of 3M-101 costs about $5, and, if you don't leave the cap off, it will do about 50 installations; leave the cap off or put it on too tight so it breaks when the tube oozes a bit and hardens and it will only do about two installs!

Drive the screws home and snug. Run the cables up the transom. Secure them with some nylon cable clamps and more SS Pan Head Sheet Metal Screws, probably #6 and 1/2-inch.

Plug the transducer cable into the X-65 head.

These are nice transducers. I have the Lowrance sonar and Speed/Temp transducers on both of my Whalers. The X-65 is a nice Fishfinder/Sonar, too.

I didn't recommend 3M-5200 because I have heard it is very difficult to remove. If the location turns out to be a problem, it will be easier to change if you use a caulk like 3M-101 instead of an adhesive sealant like 3M-5200.
