I am seriously purchasing a boat for offshore fishing and trying to decide between the 18' Outrage and the 20' Wellcraft Step V. I have heard some good things about the Wellcraft and I really like the deep V, however, being the Whaler fan that I am, I also like the Outrage, (1980's vintage on both boats).

I'm leaning towards the Outrage because it is a little lighter and smaller, it's a Doherty design, and requires less horsepower, better gas mileage. I have really been satisfied with my 15' BW which I plan to keep for inshore fishing. Also, I would like to restore the Outrage to near original condition.

What attracts me to the Wellcraft is the deep-V, the higher sides, and alot of fishing room inside. I've also heard that it is a very good offshore, rough water boat. It's also a very good looking boat and came in cuddy cabin and center console versions. On either boat I plan to buy it with a motor, then restore the boat (as my budget allows) and later purchase a new motor.

I would appreciate any comments.

That Wellcraft is an impressive boat. It and the airslot helped put Wellcraft on the map. I would go with the Whaler for obvious reasons but the 20 cuddy is great if you want the bigger boat. It is a much bigger boat.
