I've been looking around this summer for a replacement for my 22 Revenge. I knew I wanted a 17' - 19' Center console, but I was flip flopping between a 99 17' Outrage and an 18' Dauntless. About a month and a half ago I was home doing some work on a weekday, and noticed a 1997 17 Outrage with a 150 Mariner and trailer for $12,500.00 in Indiana. I imediately called up, got the details, offered $12,000, and the guy went for it. The guy said it was mine, and I told him I would get him a bank check in two days. Here is where I screwed up. Two days later I got around to going to the bank, got the check, and realized I didn't have the guys address. I call, and his partner at work tells me he sold the boat to someone else and the had wired the money that day (why didn't I think of that???) Well this was par for the coarse for me so...Then I take off a day of work to drive three hours out to the Hamptons to look at a 17 O and an 18 D, both used. Get out there and both boats are real nice, but being the week before the 4th, the dealer figures he is not going to have any problem selling, so he won't deal. Get stuck in the worst traffic going home takes five hours...Then, a few weeks later, I see a 1999 18 Dauntless at a dealer in MD, with a 175 Mariner, bimini, red graphics, etc (my dream boat this week) all for $14,800.00. WOW, I call up, get the particulars, question him on why the boat is overpowered, and give him a deposit. He doesnt have the boat at his place, but claims its beautiful, low hours, bla, bla, bla. Over the next three weeks, I get all sorts of excuses about why he has not been able to go get the boat from the previous owner, the dealer also tells me he got over 100 calls on the boat and had to pull the add. So the boat was supposed to come in to his place yesterday. I get an email today telling me the boat is in, its beautiful, bla, bla, bla, and, oh yeah, by the way... its actually a 1997 20' Dauntless...please someone shoot me now, stop the torture...

Hi Dan -- I might sell you my 17 Outrage for 22K -- lol. I remember you took a test drive on that 17 Outrage with 135 opti located in the Hamptons earlier this year -- and said it was a "rocket." I can't believe they won't deal -- they've had that boat for sale for around a year already! Call Surfside3 and see what they have in a recent model -- they offer a lot on used sales -- I believe they try to price a used boat at 20-25% more than they paid for it or traded for it. They have/had a recent 18 Outrage -- but were asking a lot of $$. Good luck.

I was never a big fan of SS3, but the guys at Nauset Marine hate them because they sell Whalers so cheap, so it may be worth a look. I think I'm just looking for that 'impossible deal'...

You are a victimof whaleritus. Unfortunately that stuff happens. I have had people fighting over a boatin mt front yard. How stupid! Early bird gets the worm and like my fateher always said, "you get your best deal when you are not looking!" trust me, that is the God's honest truth!

hardensheetmetal, I know how you feel. I went on a quest to find one of the old 21 outrages. First one I found was in Jacksonville Fl. Called the guy and his wife said sold. Told her to take my number in case he ran across another one. He called that nite and said he had shaken hands but no money. I told him I would drive down the next day but he felt that he needed to give them a few more days. He gave them a deadline of Friday lunch. I called at 12:30, ready to drive to Florida, and they had deposited the money that morning, sold.
Second boat was in Canaveral. After talking to the guy he said said someone was coming by to look at but he didn't think they were serious. Got a call that nite, sold.
Third boat was in Ft Lauderdale, he said he had a couple of calls and to be fair he would send pictures and the first one to call got the boat. Got the pictures 4 days later, called from the car on the way home, sold.
Fourth boat was near Miami. Was ready to drive down and called just before I left, sold.
Fifth boat, I happened to be the first one to call, offer, and drove to Tampa to pick it up. Thank goodness I now have my 21 and can quit looking.

I had similar problems. I was the first one to respond to the montauk I got. I also agreed to buy it pending a dealer inspection, paid for by the seller, but no test drive (bought last January). I learned alot from this site and from looking at some real lemons. Like you, I missed some really nice ones. Hang in there. Good Luck
