On my Montauk the wife and I have the Mustang Air Force Inflatables. You don't even know you are wearing it. A little spendy but worth the money to me.

I have the manual ones. They are comfortable to wear and as small as they are storage is no problem. Well worth the money to me.

I had heard that they were now CG approved, and did count as a PFD. Has anyone heard the same?

The West Marine catalog says the automatic
inflatables have been CG approved since 1998.

I am not sure but i think the infatables are only approved if they are worn. I know that that type V PFDs usually don't count unless worn.

You are correct, the type 5, which includes inflatables, work suits, survival suits, etc, must be worn to count as a legal PFD. I think that the vests are type 3, but would comfirm that before getting a ticket.

I am not sure about the automatics but the manuals are approved TypeIII.

I was boarded last month by the CG on Lake Michigan and had two inflatables and a throwable and was ok. If that helps.
