I came across what appears to be a decent deal on a 1966 13' Boston Whaler Sport with the original 1966 Johnson 40hp for about 1500. The boat is in fair shape, no structural damage but the clearcoat needs some attention but nothing major, the engine starts and runs but seems to have a lot of oily/gassy discharge coming from the discharge holes at the bottom of the lower unit after shutting it down. What do folks think? By the way the trailer is a fairly new sportsman in great shape.

thanks

Assume the motor has no cash value, then decide if the asking price is fair for the hull and trailer. Better yet, get a quote on a new outboard, add it to the price you are willing to pay for the hull and trailer and see how it compares to other boats with more recent power. The old outboard may go awhile yet, but it still has nearly zero value. If the hull and wood interior are in decent shape, I'd offer $900 for the whole rig then buy a new Tohatsu/Nissan 40 and bolt it on.

I would be tempted to take a different approach. Since it has the original 1966 motor, I would think about restoring the entire rig, motor and all to near original condition. What a classic that would be!
