I'm trying to decide which boat to get the new 2001 13 sport or 13 classic. I'm trying to purchase my first boston whaler. If anyone can give me some info which way to go.thanks

A good friend of mine just bought a new 2002 gls13 and we have done a lot of side by side comparisons to my 13 sport. These 2 boats are totally different in a lot of ways. The new 13 is much heavier and seems a stronger boat, with a lot of room in the stern, since the fuel tank and battery go under the seat. The bottom of the hull is radically different, reminding me more of a Dauntless, the side sponsons don't go as far forward and the the rear of the boat is laid out different. Also, the drainplug is well above the waterline, making it self bailing.
With the extra weight and strength the boat new with the 40 Merc 2 stroke ran about 34-35 mph. My friend ordered a 50 Merc 3cyl and changed engines a couple of weeks ago, and now runs 41-42 and has gobs of torque to pull skiiers. All said, the classic 13 is lighter and performs better with 40 or smaller engine and the layout seems inside seems longer while the gls seems wider and more rounded. Two different boats altogether. Just my 2 cents worth.
