Hi
I have been lurking for a while, and am looking to take the plunge. I have my eye on a Montauk project boat, and am looking for some advice. I will not be able to run the engine, so how can I do a compression test? what else should i look for on the engine?
I will tap the hull for delam and look for any obvious defects. There is no wiring or cables, so no problem there.
I am looking to run the boat in the chesepeake on nice days, and fly fish the rivers in the area. My budget says this might be the way to go for now. I am guessing that on a good day I will also run offshore a couple miles from NJ to NC am I underboated here?
Any thoughts, advice?

You did not say what kind of motor or did it come with a control box. With the control box you can hook the motor up pretty easy ck comp with a comp ga,also ck for spark. You also want to ck the foot oil and make sure there is no water in it. No matter what you won't to change the water pump ,r/r carbs/change plugs and foot oil. ALL THIS IS PRETTY easy to do,and will help you get aquainted with your motor. It will be fun and helpful

Thanks. did not realize i should change the pump, but it makes sense. There is no control box (maybe a story there, not sure)I fear I am buying a big in a poke with the engine, and will price it as such.

Some more info might be helpful, what year and make of engine? What year is the boat and what is the asking price?
