Hello All,

I recently purchased a 1985 Boston Whaler Outrage 18 with an '85 150hp Johnson. I never thought that I would be able to afford a Whaler but after 2 years of searching, I found this one for just over $7k and bought it the next day. I have started to make a few repairs and have a couple of questions.

I have looked through the past year of each forum and have not been able to find the answers to the following questions. I understand that I may have missed them. If my questions have been answered please direct me to the previous forum. Thanks in advance.

FIRST of all, there is an igloo cooler in front of the center console with teak brackets to hold it in place. The cooler is garbage and beyond any sort of repair. The brackets are spaced to take a 31" x 14" cooler (measured at the base). The Igloo 72 quart cooler is to small and I believe the next size is to large. Any recomendations?

SECOND, the eye on the bow of the hull is slightly damaged, and the fiberglass around it is also damaged. The previous owner was very carefull about keeping the insides dry and sealed around the eye with caulk. I would like to repair this properly this Winter but I do not know what is going on inside their and how I should go about fixing it. Any help would be appreciated.

THIRD, I am slightly confused about how the hull is constructed and where water runs inside the boat. What is below the two deck panels along either side of the gas tank deck panel towards the aft of the boat? After I hose down the boat I pumb water out from an opening in the starboard aft section of the boat but I am not sure there this water is coming from. I also am aware that water can run from the anchor compartment to the aft of the boat through a drainage hole in that compartment. A description of how the hull is formed would greatly help my understanding. (also - those panels on either side of the tank panel are slightly soft, any comments?)

Thanks you again for your help in advance. I hope that after I have owned this boat for a while I will be able to be of help to others on this forum but for now I am still figuring everything out.

I will take the THIRD..."water can run from the anchor compartment to the aft of the boat through a drainage hole in that compartment"...I don't think so. The hole in the forward compartment goes straight thru the hull overboard. I will email you a few pics of the hull without the floor to help answer some of your questions. Also in the pics the gas tank and all else has been removed. Congatulations on your new boat!

Regarding your Igloo cooler question, the 72 QT model is even too small for a Montauk, so I would definitely go to the 94Qt size. Dave's can make a tan pleat cushion for it. The varnished mahogany cooler cleats can be easily moved to accomodate this cooler.

If you're going to be raising the console 4" (highly recommended), you might consider the Igloo 162Qt model, with cushion. Don't worry about the extra width, and the extra seating height is nice. This makes a really nice seat for two, or a lounge for one, a gives lots of much needed dry storage capacity. I have used this solution on my 18.

The coolers are usually the Marine models. Try West Marine for an example and pricing.

Also see Igloo for other alternatives:

It is my understanding that only a couple of lines of Igloo coolers will stand up to day to day UV exposure and physical abuse. The Marine line is the most durable.

Sams Club also sells a "special" Marine cooler, not listed on the Igloo site. I called Igloo, and they stated that any cooler with the word Marine in the model description contained all of the ruggedized components. So the Sams model would also be an option. It has dimensions which are different that the standard line of Marine coolers.
Good Luck,

tlynch, The cooler on my 84 18 Outrage is a Gott 80 qt. The original invoice and packing slip from Whaler indicates this model. The teak holdowns fit beneath the cooler and strap down with bungees.
Although the newer Montauks have a Igloo 94, and the Outrage console is the same.

Your bow eye repair can be done easily as long as it is gelcoat chipping, I did it on mine this winter although it can be difficult to get to with the eye in place.
Use Spectrum gel coat paste, available at any Whaler dealer or West Marine on line.

eric, could you email those pics also,

Gott coolers were never offered on Boston Whalers. That must have been a Dealer substitution.

How's this for Igloo Marine coolers pricing:

72 Qt: $49.99
94 Qt: $79.99
128 Qt:$149.50
162 Qt:$224.95

Shoreway Marine, page 42 of catalog, 800-443-5408.

If you need a cushion, contact Dave's

If you need floor cleats, or the bungee cord clip that mounts at the handle, contact Boston Whaler.

lhg, you are correct, in looking over my papers again, the Gott 80 was only on the dealer paperwork. Sorry.

Does this mean a Igloo 94 was the only correct model to fit up front?

Until Igloo redesigned their cooler line in 1989, all Montauks and Outrages with Standard Console were offered with the Igloo 86 qt cooler. That would have been original factory. For the Montauk line, BW dropped down to the 72 qt as the replacement offering. But for an Outrage, I would definitly go with the 94 qt, or larger.

we have outrage 18 with 86 Qt cooler seat.
need to replace cooler with 94 Qt - do you have to move the teak brackets to fit? and does the bigger cooler then stick out further then the center console? Is there anyway to find an old 86 qt cooler to replace with the orginal?
thanks lili
