I too commute to the Downtown NYC financial district (20 exchange place--once and now again, I believe, the tallest building in downtown). I worked from home that day because I was coming down with a cold and didn't want to get others in the office sick.
My normal commute would have put me right there for the first hit...something I'm glad I did not have to witness.

The hoboken-WFC ferry now goes around the tip of manhattan to southstreet seaport...a verrrrry eerie view.

Off of the southern tip of Manhattan (the "battery") lies a small but very valuable island called Governor's Island. It was a huge Coast Guard base until it was de-commisioned a few years ago. The City wanted it developed and there have been a lot of proposals. ie. arial tram like Roosevelt Island.

Now that we have had our pacifist face slapped, I would suggets it be made an air base repleat with a anti-aircraft missle battery and a couple of Harrier jump-jets.

Unfortunately, a couple of Whalers with .50 machine guns ain't gonna be enough. Of course we need them to make sure the next threat doesn't sail up the harbor in a container ship. All very....unsettling.

The whalers won't do it for the container ship, but the 250' Cutter Campbell anchored off of Battery Park with the 5" rapid fire gun on the bow will.

Spent Monday at Battery park in my ambulance on standby for the disaster. Watching the lack of traffic in the harbor and the helicopter practicing landings on the Campbell helped pass the time. Fortunately, no one was hurt on Monday necessitating any of our services.

What an experience!!

With just about all military installations around New York City gone, maintaining Governors Island as a Coast Guard/Military base is a very wise thing to do.
