I just came across a fascinating little science story on how upwellings of bubbles from the sea floor can sink ships ( http://www.newscientist.com/news/news.jsp?id=ns99991350 . (This is a very good science information site in the UK).

It was postulated as a reason why ships have vanished without trace in the Bermuda Triangle and the North Sea.

Of course, if a Whaler did get caught in one of these, it would eventually just pop to the surface again.
