My compliments to the moderator and contributors for this forum! Lots of useful information and interesting discussions. This is my first query, but there are sure to be more.

I just purchased a 1974 Montauk that has seen some hard use (it was originally a police boat). It has a 2-stroke oil-injected 90HP Mercury that appears to date from the mid 1980s.

I've got several questions about this engine:

Does anyone know how to trace the date of manufacture from a serial number or casting number on a Mercury? Or even where to find the serial number?

What's the best source for service manuals?

What type of grease is recommended for lubricating steering and control cables?

Thanks for any assistance you can offer!

Assuming the engine is a 3 cylinder 90, it would have to be 1988 or newer. Prior to then, 90 HP Mercs were in-line 6's, non-oil injected.

I can give you the year if you can give me a serial number.

The nice thing about owning an older outboard like a Mercury is that the people who made it are still in business and able to support it.

Your local Mercury outboard dealer (and there are probably a couple of them) can sell you a service manual. They can also pinpoint the year from the serial number.

If you need parts you can get them, too.

My 1976 Mercury engine is still running very smoothly.

Is it an inline 6 or 3 cyl? what color are the decals? Inline 6's were made up until 87 and the 3's were after that.
